Proceedings of the Third International Eurasian Maritime History Congress On History of Shipbuilding
The Proceedings of the III International Eurasian Maritime History Congress on History of Shipbuilding bring together twenty-two papers by international scholars, with a special emphasis on Turkish and Portuguese seafaring, two maritime cultures with separate but parallel histories of exploration, trade, and scientific and technological development. The cultural heritage is an intangible but integral part of the environment, and it is sometimes referred to as the soul of a landscape. Maritime history and archaeology studies ships, boats, their construction and the landscapes where they sail. Ships are perhaps the most exciting machines built by society. They are inhabited and they carry ideas, things, and people across bodies of water. Studying them puts us in contact with stories of technological innovation, the struggle to understand the physical world, and the dreams and hopes of the people that built, sailed, and sometimes lost them.
